The many damaging storms that have ripped through the US have gotten people thinking on re-thinking their approach to storms and the damage they can cause. It’s not enough to make the home stronger for more and more storms are surprising scientists and researcher as to their utter power and destructive energy. So what do you do to protect yourself against a category 4 or 5 hurricane? Design a house that is tough enough. way above the projected storm surge and lets the water go through the house either by incorporating self-destructing elements that would give way to let water flow through or around your house or more. Some new houses are designed about 12 feet off the ground with breakaway staircases and walls on the lower floor which is usually the garage which would have to remain standing even as the storm surge passes through.
The damage will be limited to the lower floor that would prevent the rest of the house from crumbling into the rising flod waters. As with hurricane Katrina, most of the damage was from the storm surge rather than the storm. Building higher homes prvents damage from the water and building stronger foundations prevents the house from getting swept away by the rushing waters. With such innovative home designs, we might be able to limit the loss of life and damage to property allowing people to survive and move on with their lives.
